In the cold of a Denver evening on December 16, 1993, a week before Christmas, 27-year-old Stephen Nieto, a Hispanic male, was walking home with a friend. Their path along West Byers Place near Tejon Street was abruptly interrupted when a car pulled over beside them. The driver emerged from the vehicle, a silver or gray compact car, possibly similar to a Ford Escort, and without warning, opened fire.
Stephen was struck by the gunfire as the assailant quickly got back in his car and fled the scene.
Emergency services were called, and Stephen was rushed to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on December 17, 1993. The sudden and violent nature of his death left his family, including his girlfriend Laureen Sandoval and their two young sons, devastated. His son, Stephen Nieto Jr., was only four years old at the time of his father's murder. Friends and family described Stephen as a hard-working man and a dedicated father, making the seemingly random act of violence all the more difficult to comprehend.
The Denver Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives learned that Stephen had stopped at a neighborhood bar on his way home and had been involved in an altercation. However, they do not believe he was involved with gangs or drugs, and the motive for his killing remains unclear. The primary suspect was described as a Latino male in his 30s, standing about 5 feet 6 inches tall with a medium build and a small mustache. He was reportedly wearing a black and yellow baseball cap at the time of the shooting. Police believe there were other occupants in the suspect's vehicle who witnessed the murder.
Despite the passing of years, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made. The Denver Police Department's Cold Case Unit continues to seek information from the public that might lead to the identification and arrest of the person or persons responsible for Stephen Nieto's death.
