In the cold of a Denver evening on December 16, 1993, a week before Christmas, 27-year-old Stephen Nieto, a Hispanic male, was walking home with a friend. Their path along West Byers Place near Tejon Street was abruptly interrupted when a car pulled over beside them. The driver emerged from the vehicle, a silver or gray compact car, possibly similar to a Ford Escort, and without warning, opened fire.
