In the crisp autumn morning of October 25, 2004, in Denver, Colorado, the life of 35-year-old Nicolas Ferrel-Ibarra was tragically cut short. At approximately 9:50 a.m., near the intersection of West Florida Avenue and South Federal Boulevard, Ferrel-Ibarra was confronted by two individuals as he sat in his vehicle. The assailants demanded a bank deposit he was carrying.
In a desperate attempt to escape the robbery, Ferrel-Ibarra tried to drive away.
It was at this moment that one of the suspects fired, fatally wounding him. The brazen act of violence left a void in the community and launched a homicide investigation by the Denver Police Department. Before moving to Denver, Ferrel-Ibarra had been a reporter in Juarez, Mexico.
The ensuing investigation led detectives to identify one of the men allegedly involved in the robbery and murder. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Felipe Jesus Buelna, a Hispanic male who was born on March 9, 1976. At the time, he was described as being 6'3' tall, weighing 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The second suspect in the confrontation has not been publicly identified.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the case has grown cold over the years. Felipe Jesus Buelna has remained at large, eluding capture for the murder of Nicolas Ferrel-Ibarra. The Denver Police Department's Cold Case Unit continues to seek information from the public regarding his whereabouts and to bring a sense of justice to the family of the slain man. As of recent updates, the case remains an unsolved homicide.
