Among those gathered outside on May 26, 1999, was 24-year-old James Oneal Johnson, a Black male who was enjoying the company of his friends. The casual get-together, marked by drinks and music, took a tragic and abrupt turn when the unmistakable sound of gunshots pierced the night.
In the ensuing chaos, it was discovered that Johnson had been struck by the gunfire.
He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but the severity of his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died. His death was classified as a homicide, launching an investigation by the Denver Police Department.
