On the night of March 4, 2003, 22-year-old Rito M. Lopez was asleep in his residence at 3274 West Center Avenue in Denver, Colorado, when multiple suspects forcibly entered his home. The intruders demanded money from Lopez, and during the course of the home-invasion robbery, one of the suspects shot him. Lopez was immediately transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight on March 5, 2003.
