In the fall of 2014, a vibrant young woman's life was tragically cut short in a Denver apartment, a place that should have been a sanctuary. Amanda Anders, a 19-year-old with aspirations of becoming an art teacher, was known for her free spirit and her passion for helping others express themselves through drawing. Her life, full of promise and creativity, came to a violent end on the night of October 29th.
That evening, an argument erupted within the apartment she shared with her roommate, 24-year-old Jose King. The dispute escalated, and in a moment of irreversible violence, King turned a weapon on Amanda and her friend, 22-year-old Nancy Worrell, who was a bright culinary school student with dreams of opening her own business. Both women were shot and killed, their bright futures extinguished in an instant.
After the shooting, King fled the scene, stepping over the bodies of his victims as he made his escape. His freedom was short-lived, however, as he was apprehended by Castle Rock police a short time later. In a moment of candor with the authorities, he admitted that he 'did a bad thing.' The ensuing investigation and trial brought to light the senseless nature of the crime, a result of a heated argument that spiraled into a double homicide.
The judicial process concluded with a jury finding Jose King guilty on two counts of first-degree murder after deliberating for just an hour and a half. In January 2016, a judge sentenced him to two consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, one for each of the lives he had taken. During the sentencing, family and friends of both women filled the courtroom, sharing their profound grief and celebrating the vibrant lives of Amanda and Nancy, ensuring their memories would not be defined by the tragic manner of their deaths.
