In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Denver, Colorado, the life of 53-year-old David Darnell Edwards, a man known affectionately to friends and family as 'Super Dave,' was tragically cut short. On March 15, 2015, at approximately 10:45 p.m., the sound of three gunshots pierced the night in the 3400 block of Race Street. The gunshots were detected by the Denver Police Department's 'Shot Spotter' system, prompting an immediate dispatch of officers to the scene.
A 911 call from a nearby resident also reported the shooting.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers discovered a grim scene. David Edwards was found lying partially inside the driver's-side door of a parked Subaru, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The vehicle was registered to 26-year-old Stefan Bloom, who was present at the scene and had blood on his face when contacted by the police. Bloom, who possessed a concealed weapons permit, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. As he was being arrested, he told officers, 'I was in fear for my life,' and indicated that his weapon was next to the car.
Stefan Bloom was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of David Edwards. His claim of self-defense became a central point of the investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter. While the specific details of the interaction between the two men prior to the shooting were not immediately released, the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings focused solely on Bloom as the only suspect. Following an autopsy, the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner officially ruled Edwards' death a homicide.
