Randy E. James, a 39-year-old male, was fatally shot on January 3, 2015, in Chicago, Illinois, marking the city's first homicide of that year. The incident took place in the Austin neighborhood, where James was standing on a sidewalk early in the morning when he heard gunshots and realized he had been struck. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward. His death was among many that year as Chicago experienced a rise in gun-related violence.
