In a tragic turn of events that shattered a family, 37-year-old Melissa Kay Prettyman, a female resident of Grand Junction, Colorado, lost her life on Sunday, January 14, 2018. The devastating incident unfolded within the supposed sanctuary of her own home in Orchard Mesa. Melissa was discovered by authorities in the master bedroom, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
The chain of events leading to this violent end reportedly began when Melissa confided in a friend that she had asked her husband, Kalab Prettyman, for a divorce. This conversation, a prelude to a new chapter she would never get to write, appears to have been the catalyst for the tragedy. In the aftermath of the shooting, Kalab Prettyman himself reached out to family members, confessing to them that he had shot his wife. This admission was later repeated to an investigator, cementing his role as the primary suspect in the eyes of the law.
Responding to calls reporting the shooting, the Grand Junction Police Department arrived at the scene and swiftly took 37-year-old Kalab Prettyman into custody. During the booking process, he once again stated that he had shot his wife. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and held at the Mesa County Sheriff's Detention Center.
