In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Aurora, Colorado, on March 20, 2018, a violent encounter left one man dead and another wounded. Potros Mabany, a 21-year-old male, was shot and died at the scene in the 1000 block of South Evanston Way. The Arapahoe County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Mabany's death was a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
Another man who was shot during the same incident managed to get to a nearby 7-Eleven, was transported to a hospital, and survived his injuries.
The Aurora Police Department began an investigation and soon identified a suspect. They announced they were searching for 39-year-old Joseph Goudy Lugo, who they considered armed and dangerous. Police indicated that the shooting was not a random act. Lugo had a significant criminal history, including previous arrests for assault, domestic violence, and weapons charges. He was described as being 5-feet 9-inches tall, weighing 245 pounds, with long black hair and distinctive tattoos on his face.
A little over a week after the shooting, on March 29, 2018, Joseph Lugo was taken into custody. He was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Potros Mabany. The investigation into the double shooting continued after his arrest.
