On the evening of April 5, 2018, Andrew Jenicek, a 27-year-old man, was fatally shot in an Edgewater, Colorado, parking lot. He had just gotten out of his car to pick up dinner for his girlfriend from a restaurant near West 20th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard. The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. when he was attacked in what began as an attempted robbery.
Jenicek was confronted by Caleb Joseph Vigil, who attempted to rob him at gunpoint.
In a moment of defiance, Jenicek threw his wallet on the ground and then lunged for the weapon. It was at this point that Vigil shot him once in the chest. After the shooting, Vigil fled to a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse where two accomplices, Devon Drizzt Howard and Alicia Elena Valdez, were waiting. As they sped away from the scene, Howard, who was driving, ran over Jenicek's body. Emergency personnel arrived to find Jenicek with a single gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation moved swiftly as witnesses provided descriptions of the suspect and the getaway vehicle. Three days later, police located the car and arrested Vigil and Valdez. Howard was apprehended shortly after. Investigators learned that the trio had acquired the gun just weeks before the murder with the intent of committing robberies. The group was also linked to other crimes, including another shooting and an armed robbery at a mobile phone store.
All three suspects faced justice for their roles in Jenicek's death. Caleb Vigil was convicted on 16 counts, including first-degree murder, and was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 118 years. Devon Howard was found guilty of 18 counts, including first-degree murder, and received a sentence of life in prison plus 279 years. Alicia Valdez was also convicted of first-degree felony murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
