In the late spring of 2019, a Colorado Springs community was shaken by the violent death of James Emanuel Quilter Jr., a 46-year-old man known for his generosity and vibrant spirit. On the evening of May 29th, outside an apartment complex in the eastern part of the city, Quilter was fatally shot, leaving behind a large and loving family, including his wife and numerous children.
Remembered as a beloved husband, father, brother, and son, his sudden passing sent ripples of grief through his wide circle of family and friends.
James, who was born in Oakland, California, had made Colorado his home since the early 1990s. He was a man of many talents, described as a builder, cook, helper, and fixer. Many in his community knew him affectionately as “Mr. James the ICE CREAM MAN,” a testament to his friendly and approachable nature. He was a community leader who was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need, living by the motto, 'Be the best at what you do.' His infectious laugh and sense of humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
The investigation into his tragic death led authorities to identify a suspect, 31-year-old Christopher Freeman Jr. A warrant was issued for Freeman's arrest in connection with the shooting. The search for Freeman extended beyond Colorado, and on June 17, 2019, he was located and apprehended by U.S. Marshals in North Carolina.
Freeman was extradited back to Colorado Springs on June 26, 2019, to face charges related to the murder of James Quilter. His arrest brought a sense of progress for a grieving community and the family of a man who was remembered for his warm and welcoming heart. The legal proceedings against Freeman would mark the next chapter in the quest for justice for James Quilter.
