The man responsible, 40-year-old Daniel Gray, admitted to the killing, which occurred while he was high on methamphetamine. Gray was ultimately found guilty of second-degree murder for his actions on that fateful day.
The tragic events unfolded following a disturbance between Hunt and a woman named Barbara Bennett.
The two were reportedly arguing over a text message Hunt had received. Gray, who was in the vicinity, heard the argument and intervened. He initially claimed to have acted in self-defense, stating that Hunt had lunged at him in a wrestling stance. However, he later recanted this claim, admitting that he did not witness any physical violence from Hunt towards Bennett.
According to Bennett’s account to detectives, she and Hunt were arguing when Gray knocked on the door. After a brief exchange, Gray left but returned when he heard the argument escalate again. Bennett stated that she and Hunt were standing with their arms around each other when she heard four successive shots. There had been previous instances of conflict between the two men, including an incident where Gray had assaulted Hunt with a barbell.
Daniel Stephen Hunt, known affectionately as 'Dizzle' to his friends and family, was a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, though he was born in Germany. He was a father of four, including two older daughters and a set of newborn twins. He was a man with a passion for cars and had a career as a tow-truck driver before starting his own successful construction and remodeling business. Remembered for his innate desire to help others and his reliability as a friend, his sudden death left a void in the lives of his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, children, father, and siblings. Following a trial, Daniel Gray was found guilty of second-degree murder and attempted first-degree assault for the shooting death of Daniel Hunt.
