In the early evening of a late March day in Aurora, Colorado, the life of 19-year-old DaVeon Michael Brooks, a young Black man, was tragically cut short. On March 26, 2020, just before 8:30 p.m., emergency responders were called to the area of East 30th Avenue and Xanadu Street. There, they found DaVeon lying in the road, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to the UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The Aurora Police Department began an investigation into the shooting, describing it as an isolated incident and stating they did not believe there was a wider threat to the community. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, the circumstances leading up to the shooting remained unclear. Authorities did not release any information about a potential motive or what DaVeon was doing in the moments before he was shot.
In the days and weeks that followed, the Adams County Coroner's Office confirmed DaVeon's identity and that his death was a homicide.
