In the early morning hours of February 27, 2021, the city of Colorado Springs was rocked by a tragedy that cut short the life of a beloved mother and vibrant member of the community. Margie Marie Crowe, a 49-year-old female, was found deceased in what initially appeared to be a traffic accident. The discovery was made at approximately 3:53 a.m. in the 3500 block of South Chelton Loop, where officers were dispatched following a report of a crash. Upon their arrival, first responders found Ms.
Crowe and soon realized the situation was far more sinister than a mere collision. Paramedics at the scene discovered that she had sustained an apparent gunshot wound.
The investigation quickly shifted from a traffic incident to a homicide, with detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department's Violent Crimes Section taking the lead. An autopsy conducted by the El Paso County Coroner's Office on March 1, 2021, confirmed the violent nature of her death. The case was officially ruled the fourth homicide in Colorado Springs that year. As investigators delved into the circumstances surrounding her death, a suspect emerged.
Less than a week after the incident, on March 5, 2021, detectives secured an arrest warrant for 33-year-old Demetrius Martin on the charge of first-degree murder. A search for Martin was launched by the CSPD's Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force, who partnered with the United States Marshals Service to track him to Arizona. On April 7, 2021, Demetrius Martin was apprehended in Tempe, Arizona, bringing a significant development to the ongoing investigation into the death of Margie Crowe. While an arrest was made, the investigation remained active as authorities continued to piece together the events that led to the untimely death of a woman remembered for her kind heart, love for her children, and her passion for singing.
