In the late summer of 2021, the community of Colorado Springs was shaken by a violent act that claimed the life of James Darrell Love, a 58-year-old man. On the afternoon of Thursday, September 9th, a shooting incident occurred near Citadel Drive. James Love was one of two individuals who sustained life-threatening injuries during the event. The other victim was identified as 62-year-old Kevin Patterson.

Both men were rushed from the scene for medical attention, but tragically, two days later, on Saturday, September 11, 2021, both James Love and Kevin Patterson succumbed to their injuries. The loss was deeply felt by their families and the community, where James was known as a cornerstone, dedicating many hours to strengthening community bonds and bringing people together. His time in the U.S. Army, where he served for 24 years and retired as a Sergeant First Class, had instilled in him qualities of resilience and leadership.

In the wake of the double homicide, the Colorado Springs Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Detectives were able to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. A warrant for first-degree murder was issued for the arrest of 43-year-old Lamar Taylor. Law enforcement officials from the Homicide/Assault Unit and the Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force actively sought to locate him following the incident.
