In the quiet neighborhood of Cimarron Hills in Colorado Springs, a horrific scene unfolded on the evening of February 1, 2022. Just before 7 p.m., police received a distressing call from a man, 29-year-old David Weingarten, who confessed to an unimaginable act. He informed the dispatcher that he had just shot and killed his wife and their infant son, stating he had been feeling unwell and that 'something just came over' him.
When officers arrived at the residence on Heather Glen Drive, they discovered a tragic scene inside the single-family home.
The victims were identified as 26-year-old Lizet Salinas-Mijangos and her eight-month-old son, George Weingarten, both of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The male infant and his mother were pronounced dead at the scene. Miraculously, a second child, the couple's 20-month-old daughter, was found unharmed inside the home. The young girl was later placed in the care of family members. The incident was isolated, and authorities assured the public that there was no ongoing threat.
David Weingarten was immediately taken into custody at the scene. During questioning, he revealed that he had been experiencing 'bad thoughts' throughout the day. He stated that his son's crying had been making him anxious. In his confession, Weingarten explained that he retrieved his. 45 caliber handgun from his vehicle and went back inside the house, where he shot both his wife and son. He claimed he did it because it would be quick and limit their suffering.
Weingarten was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Following his arrest, he underwent competency evaluations, which delayed the legal proceedings. Eventually, he was deemed competent to stand trial. In October 2024, David Weingarten was found guilty on charges of murder, child abuse, and reckless endangerment. He was subsequently sentenced to two life sentences in prison for the murders of his wife and infant son.
