In the early morning hours of a summer Saturday in Denver, a dispute escalated into deadly violence, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Just after 1 a.m. on June 11, 2022, at the intersection of 21st and Market Street, 23-year-old Jason Morales was shot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Another adult male was also shot and injured during the incident, though his condition was not publicly released.
The events leading up to the
shooting reportedly began with a physical altercation. Video evidence from the scene showed a confrontation involving several people. It appears that a man, who would later become the gunman, bumped into a group of women, leading to an exchange of words and then a physical fight between the man and at least two other individuals, one of whom was Jason Morales. Following the fight, the man who had been struck returned and opened fire.
Despite the tragic loss of life, the investigation into Jason Morales's death did not lead to any criminal charges. The Denver District Attorney's Office announced in October 2022 that they would not be filing charges against the shooter. Prosecutors stated that they did not believe they could overcome a claim of self-defense and prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. This decision was met with anguish by Morales's family, who felt that the justice system had failed them.
Jason Joseph Morales, known to his loved ones as 'Lil' Man,' was remembered as a happy and positive person with infectious energy. He was a father to a young daughter and was survived by his parents and numerous siblings. He had attended Adams City High School and worked as a construction laborer. His family and friends honored his memory by wearing orange or black, his favorite colors, at his funeral services.
