In the autumn of 2022, a life was tragically cut short in Aurora, Colorado. Najah Jayleen Shumock, a 39-year-old woman, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Sunday, October 23, 2022. The incident occurred at a townhouse in the Mission Viejo neighborhood, on South Mobile Circle. Emergency services were called to the residence around 2 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers found Ms. Shumock with a gunshot wound. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away. The Arapahoe County Coroner's Office later officially ruled her death a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting led Aurora police to a suspect, 31-year-old Tamara Minh Le. She was identified as an ex-girlfriend of Shumock. According to Shumock's sister, Le had previously lived with them but had moved out and was not heard from while Shumock served an 11-month jail sentence. Following Shumock's release a few weeks before the shooting, she and Le had reportedly been spending a significant amount of time together.
Surveillance footage from the day of the incident captured the moments leading up to the fatal shooting. The video showed Najah Shumock entering the townhouse and standing in the living room while using her phone. It is believed that the fatal shot was fired from outside, through a missing portion of the screen door. The footage then shows the suspect fleeing the scene. In a strange turn of events, the suspect returned to the townhouse approximately 13 minutes later and attempted to enter, but the door had been locked. Based on the evidence gathered, Tamara Minh Le was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Najah Jayleen Shumock's death. She was taken into custody and held without bond at the Arapahoe County jail.
