On a tragic Sunday evening, October 30, 2022, the life of 21-year-old Taylor McKenna Smith Maxwell was cut short in Longmont, Colorado. She was the passenger in a truck with her mother, heading home after picking up new tires, when they found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time at the intersection of Highway 287 and Yellowstone Road. The series of events that would end in heartbreak began to unfold.
In what has been described as an attempted carjacking, multiple shots were
fired into the truck Taylor was in. One of the bullets struck the young woman in the chest, piercing her lung and leading to her death. Her mother, behind the wheel, drove frantically to the hospital, but Taylor's injuries were too severe. She was pronounced dead in Boulder, Colorado.
Within 90 minutes of the fatal shooting, law enforcement apprehended two suspects, identified as Martin Serta and Adriana Vargas. Both are now facing charges of second-degree murder in connection with Taylor's death. A third individual, Marissa Rios, was also arrested on unrelated warrants. The senseless act of violence left a family and community grappling with the sudden and tragic loss of a young woman who had her whole life ahead of her.
