On May 7, 1988, Patrolman Stephen A. Sandlin, a 21-year-old rookie cop, was fatally shot inside the Mountainair Police Department building in Mountainair, New Mexico. The incident occurred around 7:30 pm, a time when most of the town was attending a talent show at the local high school.
