On August 24, 1999, a tragic incident occurred in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when 30-year-old Lisa Guerrero and her 20-year-old brother Eddie Guerrero were shot while parked in their car on the 200 block of Sunny Slope Rd. SW in the South Valley. Lisa was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds, while Eddie was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries four days later.
The case, which has now become one of the cold cases handled by the
Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office remains unsolved as of the current date. Despite the lack of scientific evidence at the time of the incident, the BCSO Cold Case Unit has been actively pursuing leads and reevaluating the case with the advancement of forensic technology. The unit has expressed hope that new information and community involvement could help crack the case. In 2017, as part of a billboard campaign, Lamar Advertising donated 20 billboards to highlight the Guerrero case, among others, in an effort to gather more tips from the public. The billboards featured the faces of the Guerrero siblings and a message stating, “You Know Who Killed Us!” along with a reward and a tip line.
There have been no reported arrests or identified suspects in the case. The investigation has been ongoing, with detectives relying on any information that might come from the public. Sgt. John Allen, supervisor of the Cold Case Unit Detectives at BCSO, emphasized the importance of community participation in solving the case, stating that no tip is too small or insignificant. The BCSO has chosen to highlight this case on billboards because it is believed to have more leads compared to other cold cases, although specific details about these leads have not been disclosed.
The lack of scientific evidence at the time of the crime has been a significant challenge. However, with advancements in technology such as DNA extraction, ballistic testing, and fiber carbon data analysis, the BCSO is retesting and reevaluating the existing evidence to generate new leads. The case is one of 70 cold cases being handled by the BCSO Cold Case Unit, and the department remains committed to bringing justice to the families of the victims.
As the case continues to be investigated, the BCSO encourages anyone with information to come forward. The community's involvement is seen as crucial in providing the closure that the Guerrero family deserves. Despite the passage of time, the determination to solve this case remains strong, with the hope that new information will eventually lead to the identification and apprehension of the perpetrators.
