On February 2, 2015, 36-year-old Lawrence Chapman was found shot to death near Kathryn Avenue and Ortiz Drive in southeast Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Albuquerque Police Department responded to reports of a suspicious death in the area and discovered Chapman's body with apparent gunshot wounds.
In the days following the incident, APD released photos of a man identified as a person of interest in the case.
The images were disseminated to the public in hopes of gathering information that could lead to an arrest.
By February 7, 2015, police arrested 35-year-old Demetrius Wright in connection with Chapman's murder. Wright was charged with an open count of murder for the shooting death of Chapman near the 7-11 on San Mateo and Kathryn. Detectives were able to identify Wright after interviewing a man they had initially considered a person of interest in the case.
The arrest of Wright brought closure to one of four homicides that occurred in Albuquerque over that particular weekend. At the time of his arrest, Wright had a history of previous offenses, including harassment and aggravated assault.
Lawrence Chapman's death was among the numerous homicides in Albuquerque between October 2012 and December 2017, a period during which the city experienced a significant number of violent crimes.
