Maria Rosita Gallegos, a 49-year-old Hispanic female from La Madera, became one of the first victims in a deadly rampage that would ultimately claim five lives. The events of June 15, 2017, began to unfold in the small community of La Madera. It was there that Damian Herrera, the 21-year-old son of Maria Gallegos, initiated his violent spree. Following what has been described as a domestic dispute, Herrera turned a weapon on his own family. He fatally shot his mother, Maria Rosita Gallegos, his stepfather, Max Trujillo Sr., who was 55, and his 20-year-old brother, Brendon Herrera. The motive for this familial annihilation remains shrouded in the complexities of their relationships, but the outcome was a brutal and sudden loss of three lives within the supposed sanctuary of their home.
After the initial killings, Damian Herrera fled the scene, embarking on a harrowing journey that would spread fear and claim more innocent lives across a vast expanse of northern New Mexico. His violent path continued as he traveled north, eventually reaching the community of Tres Piedras. There, he encountered 61-year-old Michael Kyte, whom he shot and killed before stealing his truck. Herrera's desperate and violent flight from the law then took him further, to the small town of Abiquiu. At a local general store, he senselessly shot and killed 59-year-old Manuel Serrano, another stranger who tragically crossed his path. The seemingly random nature of these subsequent killings added another layer of terror to the unfolding events, as it became clear that no one was safe from Herrera's violent rampage.
The extensive manhunt for Damian Herrera concluded later that same day. After a high-speed chase, law enforcement officers were able to apprehend him, bringing an end to the string of violent acts that had terrorized the region. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Damian Herrera was arrested and faced multiple charges for the five murders he committed.
