In the late summer of 2017, the life of 30-year-old David McDonald was tragically cut short in Clovis, New Mexico. On the morning of Tuesday, September 5, 2017, police responded to a call and found McDonald on the ground near an apartment complex. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder area. Emergency medical personnel provided immediate aid and transported him to a local hospital, but his injury proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death
of the male victim quickly led authorities to identify a suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for 30-year-old Darryl Turner in connection with the fatal shooting. In the days following the incident, law enforcement actively sought information on Turner's whereabouts. It was discovered that Turner had fled the state to California. His time as a fugitive was limited, however, as he was apprehended in California on unrelated charges. Following his arrest, he was extradited back to New Mexico to face legal proceedings for his alleged role in McDonald's death.
Darryl Turner was initially indicted on a charge of second-degree murder. His case went to trial, and after four days of proceedings, a Curry County jury convicted him of a lesser charge, voluntary manslaughter, in February 2019. Two months later, in April 2019, Turner, then 31, was sentenced to the maximum penalty for his conviction: six years in prison. The sentencing brought a legal conclusion to the violent death of David McDonald.
