On June 24, 2020, at approximately 2:10 a.m., Roswell Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of South Atkinson Avenue following a distress call from the mother of Omar and Alberto Ceballos. Upon arrival, medics pronounced 40-year-old Omar Ceballos deceased at the scene, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigations identified Omar's brother, 34-year-old Alberto Ceballos, as the primary suspect in the shooting.
At the time, Alberto was out on conditions of release related to previous charges, including DWI and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm.
On June 29, 2020, during a traffic stop on the east side of Roswell, officers apprehended Alberto without incident. He was a passenger in the vehicle, which was seized pending a search warrant; the female driver was interviewed but faced no charges related to the case. Alberto was subsequently held without bond at the Chaves County Detention Center.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Alberto Ceballos was convicted of killing his brother. He received a sentence of 16 years in prison, with four years suspended, resulting in 12 years of incarceration.
