In the early morning hours of August 1, 2020, the promising life of 18-year-old Fedonta Mikel J.B. White, a talented male basketball star from Santa Fe, New Mexico, was tragically cut short. Known to his friends and family as "JB," he was just a week away from starting his journey as a Division I basketball player at the University of New Mexico. The incident that ended his life unfolded at a house party in the Chupadero-Tesuque area of Santa Fe County.
What began as a gathering of young
people descended into chaos when a physical altercation broke out between White and another teenager. The confrontation escalated with devastating speed, culminating in gunfire. White was shot, and despite his friends' efforts to rush him to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries. The news of the death of the beloved Santa Fe High School graduate, a consensus top 100 recruit, sent shockwaves of grief and disbelief through the community.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office launched an immediate investigation into the homicide. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect, 16-year-old Estevan Montoya. Montoya was apprehended later the same day with the assistance of the Santa Fe Police Department. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a handgun, and negligent use of a deadly weapon.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, it was revealed that the fatal encounter stemmed from the altercation at the party. In May 2022, a jury found Estevan Montoya guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of JB White.
