On the afternoon of September 9, 2022, a sense of normalcy at an Albuquerque gas station was shattered by sudden violence. Male victim, Raul Zapata, age 51, was seated in his vehicle at the Alon gas station located at Central Avenue and Tramway Boulevard. At approximately 4:35 p.m., he was fatally shot. The Albuquerque Police Department responded to the scene and immediately launched a homicide investigation into the tragic event that claimed Zapata's life.
In the days that followed,
detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the shooting. They released images of a suspect's vehicle to the public, hoping for a lead that would help them identify the person responsible for Raul Zapata's death. Despite these efforts, the trail seemed to grow cold, and for months, the case remained unsolved, leaving a grieving family and community searching for answers. The initial investigation yielded no immediate arrests, and the suspect remained at large, a shadow in a case that was far from closed.
A significant breakthrough in the investigation came nearly ten months later. On July 10, 2023, a suspect was arrested and booked into the Curry County Adult Detention Center in connection with the homicide. The suspect faced multiple felony charges and was held without bond. However, in a bewildering turn of events, he was mistakenly released from custody in October 2023 after being transferred to a state correctional facility for a separate parole violation. This error was attributed to a breakdown in communication between the Curry County jail and the New Mexico Department of Corrections. As of early 2025, the suspect remains at large, and the Albuquerque Police Department continues to seek information from the public to bring resolution to the case and justice for Raul Zapata.
