On November 14, 2022, 32-year-old Armando Torres Marquez was found with a gunshot wound to the head near the intersection of Camino Capitan and Galisteo Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Initially, authorities responded to reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle; however, medical personnel later determined that Marquez had been shot. He was transported to Christus St.
Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The investigation revealed that Marquez had been involved in a dispute over a debt with 31-year-old Erik Ibarra-Salcido. Witnesses recounted that on the evening of the incident, Marquez was accompanied by a coworker and another individual in a red truck. They met with Ibarra-Salcido, known by the street name 'Lazy,' who confronted Marquez about the owed money. Despite Marquez's attempts to negotiate, including offering a motorcycle as payment, the confrontation escalated. Ibarra-Salcido allegedly brandished a firearm, threatened Marquez, and ultimately shot him. Following the shooting, Ibarra-Salcido reportedly pulled Marquez from the truck and warned the other occupants to leave the scene.
In the ensuing investigation, Santa Fe police gathered statements from multiple witnesses and analyzed cellphone forensic data, which corroborated the accounts of the events leading to Marquez's death. An arrest warrant was issued for Ibarra-Salcido, charging him with first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and two counts of bribery of a witness. Authorities believed he remained in the Santa Fe area and cautioned that he might attempt to flee upon learning of the warrant. On February 10, 2023, acting on a tip regarding his whereabouts, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop and apprehended Ibarra-Salcido without incident. He was subsequently booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center to await trial.
The case highlighted potential connections to organized crime, as some witnesses expressed reluctance to come forward due to fears of retribution, mentioning alleged ties between Ibarra-Salcido and the Juarez Cartel. However, authorities indicated that these connections were still under investigation.
