On April 5, 2021, 24-year-old David Alonso Hernandez, a resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, was fatally shot at the South Capitol Rail Runner Station. The incident also left a 38-year-old man hospitalized with injuries.

In the course of their investigation, the Santa Fe Police Department identified 22-year-old Matthew Arellano as a suspect. Arellano was arrested on April 7, 2021, and charged with murder, attempted felony, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
