In the cold of a February evening in Everett, Massachusetts, a dedicated police officer's life was tragically cut short, leaving a void in his family and the community he served. Thomas Keefe, a 42-year-old Caucasian male, was a respected officer with seven years of service on the Everett Police Department. On the night of February 20, 1902, he arrested two individuals suspected of burglary, an uncle and his nephew.
As Officer Keefe was speaking with the two suspects, the situation took a sudden and violent turn. The uncle, with his hand concealed inside his coat pocket, discharged a pistol. The bullet struck Officer Keefe, inflicting a mortal wound. Despite the grievous injury, both suspects were apprehended shortly after the shooting.
For eight days, Officer Keefe fought for his life, but he ultimately succumbed to the gunshot wound on February 28, 1902. His death left behind a grieving wife and eight children. The community mourned the loss of a dedicated officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
The wheels of justice turned, and on October 18, 1902, the uncle who fired the fatal shot was convicted of second-degree murder. His nephew, who was with him at the time of the shooting, was acquitted of the charges.
