In the early hours of January 5, 2014, a tragic event unfolded in Fall River, Massachusetts, ending the life of 26-year-old David Rodriguez. Rodriguez was fatally shot just before 1 a.m. outside the Ship's Cove Apartments located on Canal Street. Following the shooting, he was transported to St. Anne's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident marked the first homicide in the city in 15 months.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly led law enforcement to
a suspect. A man from Rhode Island, William Tate, was identified and apprehended in connection with the shooting. Tate, who was 34 at the time, was subsequently charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. The motive behind the killing appeared to stem from a personal conflict, as prosecutors suggested Rodriguez was upset that Tate was attempting to initiate a relationship with his younger sister. It was also reported that Tate had previously dated Rodriguez's girlfriend and that Rodriguez feared he was trying to rekindle that relationship.
William Tate's legal proceedings culminated in a trial where he claimed to have acted in self-defense, believing Rodriguez was armed. However, the jury found him guilty of second-degree murder in April 2016. In addition to the murder conviction, Tate was also found guilty of carrying an illegal firearm and carrying a loaded illegal firearm. In May 2016, a judge sentenced him to a lengthy prison term. The sentences for the various charges were to be served consecutively, making him ineligible for parole for at least 19 years.
