In the early morning hours of January 27, 2014, the life of 25-year-old Clarence McGregor, a Black / African American male from Dorchester, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on Rosewood Street in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood. Responding to reports of shots fired at approximately 2:45 a.m., Boston Police officers arrived to a grim scene. McGregor was discovered lying in the street, suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Nearby on the sidewalk, a second victim, 28-year-old Teasia Montgomery of Medford, was also found with critical injuries. Both were rushed to local hospitals, but their wounds proved fatal.
The investigation into the double homicide spanned over two years, as detectives and prosecutors meticulously pieced together evidence. The case was not a random act of violence; authorities believed that McGregor and Montgomery were the intended targets. The dedicated work of law enforcement eventually led them to identify three suspects responsible for the killings. Investigators utilized a combination of ballistics evidence from the scene, statements from witnesses, and cell tower records to build their case against the perpetrators.
The trail for the suspects led investigators across multiple states. One of the accused, Steven Stephen, was already in custody in Massachusetts on an unrelated gun charge. A second suspect, Tony Evans, was located and apprehended in Charlotte, North Carolina. The third and final suspect, Lorenzo Jones Jr., was tracked down and arrested by U.S. Marshals in Augusta, Georgia, in May of 2016. All three men were subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm for their roles in the deaths of Clarence McGregor and Teasia Montgomery. Family members remembered McGregor as a man who loved animals and enjoyed working with children.
