In the early hours of a cold Sunday morning in Boston, on February 23, 2014, the life of 23-year-old Daniel Paul Taylor, a Black male, was tragically cut short. Just after midnight, at approximately 12:42 a.m., police responded to a call of shots fired in the vicinity of 126 Boston Street in Dorchester. Upon arrival, officers discovered Taylor suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Boston Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The events that culminated in Taylor's death began at a work-related social gathering. Both Taylor and his co-worker, 23-year-old Marquis Smith, worked for a valet service, VPNE Parking Solutions, and had attended the event earlier in the evening. After leaving the party together in a car driven by Taylor, an argument erupted between the two men as they drove through Dorchester. The dispute escalated, leading Taylor to stop the car near the intersection of Boston and Howell streets.
What started as a verbal disagreement quickly turned into a physical altercation. Taylor reportedly exited the vehicle and pulled Smith from the passenger side. During the ensuing fight, Smith produced a firearm and shot Taylor repeatedly. After the shooting, Smith fled the scene on foot, heading in the direction of the Andrew MBTA station.
The Boston Police Homicide Unit launched an investigation into the shooting, gathering evidence and conducting interviews. Their efforts led them to identify Marquis Smith as the suspect. On Wednesday, July 30, 2014, several months after the incident, police arrested Smith at the valet company where he and Taylor had been employed. Smith, a resident of Hyde Park, was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Taylor's death and was ordered to be held without bail.
