In the pre-dawn hours of February 5, 2015, a violent home invasion in Bourne, Massachusetts, claimed the life of Lisa A. Berlanga Trubnikova, a 31-year-old white female and a Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. The attack was carried out by a fellow Coast Guard member, Adrian Loya, who had driven from Virginia to confront Trubnikova. The incident, which also left Trubnikova's wife, Anna Trubnikova, and a Bourne police officer seriously injured, was the culmination of a long-held grudge.
The night of the attack, Loya, armed with multiple firearms, forced his way into the couple's condominium. He shot and killed Lisa Trubnikova and wounded Anna. When police responded to the scene, Officer Jared MacDonald was shot in the back. Loya had meticulously planned the assault, which he documented in a lengthy manifesto. His motive stemmed from a sexual assault allegation he had made against Lisa Trubnikova years earlier while they were stationed together in Alaska, an accusation that authorities had dismissed.
Following the shootings, Loya engaged in a standoff with police before being apprehended. He faced a multitude of charges, including murder, attempted murder, and assault and battery on a police officer. In September 2017, a jury found Adrian Loya guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The verdict brought a measure of closure to the family and friends of Lisa Trubnikova, who was remembered as a dedicated Coast Guard member with a bright future. Her wife, Anna, who was severely wounded in the attack, survived and later testified against Loya at his trial.
