In the quiet hallways of the Veterans Park Apartments in Holyoke, Massachusetts, a tragedy unfolded on the morning of October 25, 2017, ending the life of 68-year-old Carmen Echevarria. A female resident of the affordable housing complex for seniors, Echevarria was found shot multiple times in a third-floor hallway of the building located at 598 Dwight Street.
The events that led to this violent end were rooted in a past relationship.
The man responsible for Echevarria's death was identified as 78-year-old Aurelio Rodriguez, a fellow resident of the apartment building. The two had been involved in a relationship prior to the fatal encounter. On that Wednesday morning, shortly before 11 a.m., Rodriguez confronted Echevarria and opened fire, inflicting the wounds that would claim her life.
Following the shooting of Echevarria, Rodriguez proceeded to the fifth floor of the building, where he lived. There, he turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.
