On the evening of August 12, 2015, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in Cambridge, Massachusetts, leading to the tragic death of 31-year-old Rasaun Nichols, a Black / African American male. Nichols was a passenger in a vehicle that was driving away from the Newtowne Court area, near the intersection of Windsor and Main Streets, at approximately 8:41 p.m.
when multiple shots were fired into the car.
The driver of the vehicle, though under duress, managed to speed away from the scene for about half a mile, coming to a stop near the bustling Kendall Square MBTA station to seek help for his wounded passenger. Emergency services were alerted, and Nichols was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead from the gunshot wounds he had sustained. The car he was in was left riddled with between five and eight bullet holes, a stark testament to the violence of the attack.
In the days following the shooting, investigators from the Cambridge Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office worked tirelessly, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. Authorities arrested 26-year-old Rooslin Altidor of Medford and charged him with the murder of Rasaun Nichols. Altidor was taken into custody and subsequently arraigned in Cambridge District Court, where he was held without bail.
