In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the life of Joseph Willie Lee Brown, a 38-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically cut short. On July 17, 2016, at approximately 2 a.m., authorities received a 911 call reporting a man down. Police responded to 343 Columbus Avenue, where they discovered Brown's body in his own driveway.
An investigation was immediately launched by the Pittsfield Police Department, with assistance from the Berkshire detective unit of the State Police, the Berkshire Law Enforcement Task Force, and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The case was treated as an apparent homicide from the outset. An autopsy later confirmed these initial suspicions, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruling that Brown's death was a homicide caused by a single gunshot wound to the chest.

His family and friends remembered him as a wonderful young man who was dearly loved and would be truly missed.
