In the autumn of 1990, the quiet community of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was shaken by the disappearance of a young boy. Twelve-year-old Jimmy Bernardo, a Caucasian male, was last seen on the evening of October 22, 1990, outside the Pittsfield Plaza Cinema Center. When he failed to return home, his concerned parents promptly reported him missing to the local police, setting in motion a search that would end in tragedy.
For weeks, there was no sign of the boy, leaving his family and the community in a state of anxious uncertainty. The heartbreaking discovery was made a month later, on November 21, 1990, when hunters found his body off a remote dirt road in Newfield, New York, approximately 200 miles from where he was last seen. The evidence at the scene made it clear that he had been murdered.
The investigation into Jimmy's death would remain cold for several years, a painful open wound for his loved ones and a source of unease for the town. The break in the case came from an unexpected source and a separate, though terrifying, incident. In January 1994, a man attempted to abduct a 12-year-old girl in downtown Pittsfield. The girl, Becky Savarese, bravely fought back and escaped her attacker. Her detailed description of the assailant and his vehicle led police to 43-year-old Lewis Lent, a former handyman and part-time janitor who, it was discovered, had worked at the very movie theater where Jimmy Bernardo was last seen. This crucial connection prompted investigators to question Lent about the Bernardo case.
Under interrogation, Lent's dark secrets began to unravel. Over the course of a few days, he confessed to the murders of both Jimmy Bernardo and another 12-year-old, Sara Anne Wood, who had disappeared from New York State. Lent provided chilling details of his crimes, revealing that he had a "master plan" to kidnap children. He recounted luring Jimmy into the movie theater, abducting him, and holding him overnight before strangling him the next day. Following his confession, Lewis Lent was indicted for the kidnapping and murder of Jimmy Bernardo in February 1994. In a surprise move just before his trial was set to begin in June 1996, Lent pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He would later also plead guilty to the murder of Sara Anne Wood.
