In the late autumn of 2014, the life of 29-year-old Anthony Gamache, a male from Goshen, was cut short in a violent encounter. On November 18, in the parking lot of a Big Y supermarket in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Gamache was involved in what authorities described as a drug deal. He was inside a car with at least two other men when a robbery was attempted. During the course of this crime, Gamache was shot once in the leg.
Following the shooting, he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
In a turn of events that would prove fatal, he was sent home with the bullet still lodged in his leg. The next day, he experienced further pain and was transported back to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, where he ultimately died. An autopsy would later reveal that his death was caused by a blood clot that formed as a direct result of the gunshot wound he had sustained.
The investigation into the homicide led to the identification and arrest of two individuals. Peter Campbell, who was 22 at the time of his conviction, was determined to have been part of the joint venture to rob Gamache. In November 2018, Campbell pleaded guilty to several charges, including involuntary manslaughter and two counts of armed assault with intent to rob. He offered an apology in court for his role in Gamache's death and was subsequently sentenced to serve up to six years in prison.
The alleged shooter, Laquan Johnson, was also apprehended and faced more severe charges. He was arraigned on counts of murder, armed assault with intent to rob, and illegal possession of a firearm. The case against him proceeded through the legal system, marking the final chapter in the tragic and untimely death of Anthony Gamache.
