On the cold morning of March 8, 2017, the life of 18-year-old Juan Espinal was cut tragically short in Lawrence, Massachusetts. A male student and high school basketball player, Espinal was remembered by loved ones as a funny, hard-working, and humble young man. He was known for his dedication to his family, working to help his mother find a new apartment and caring for his younger siblings.
His friends insisted he was focused on his education and staying away from street violence.
In the pre-dawn hours, at approximately 1:45 a.m., Espinal was walking home when he was ambushed near the intersection of Crescent and Forest streets. Two individuals, who had been lying in wait behind a parked car, chased him up Forest Street. He was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. For years, the case remained cold, leaving his family and community searching for answers. The investigation was extensive, involving local and state police, but no arrests were made, and a sense of unresolved grief hung over those who knew him.
More than seven years later, a breakthrough in the investigation brought a glimmer of justice. On October 24, 2024, law enforcement arrested 24-year-old Robert Severino in Worcester. Authorities identified Severino, who was a teenager at the time of the incident, as one of the two assailants responsible for Espinal's death. He was arraigned in Lawrence District Court on a charge of murder and pleaded not guilty. The judge ordered him to be held without bail. While the arrest of one suspect marked a significant development, the identity of the second individual involved in the fatal ambush has not been publicly released as the investigation continues.
