On June 4, 2017, Warren Devon Payne Jr., a 27-year-old resident of Springfield, Massachusetts, was fatally shot at the Kick Back Lounge on State Street. The incident occurred in the early morning hours as patrons were leaving the establishment. Payne, known affectionately as "Ickey," was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting. Another victim, 31-year-old Chauncy Marshall, succumbed to his injuries on June 8, while a third individual sustained non-fatal injuries.
