In the early morning hours of August 24, 2019, a tragic event unfolded in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston that cut short the life of Jared Shawn Brown, a 24-year-old Black/African American male from Mattapan. Responding to a call shortly before 4 a.m., police discovered Brown near Westview Street, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
His death was part of a particularly violent 12-hour period in the areas surrounding Franklin Field and Harambee Park, which experienced four separate shootings.
Jared, a Boston native born on April 14, 1995, was a graduate of the John D. O'Bryant High School and was pursuing a business degree at UMass Boston. He was described as an aspiring entrepreneur with a passion for travel, having explored numerous countries with his girlfriend. His death left his parents, brother, and a wide circle of family and friends to mourn the loss of a young man with a promising future.
