Tanjim Siam, a 24-year-old man who had immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh seeking a better life, was working his shift as a clerk at the M&R Convenience Store in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood on the evening of July 14, 2020. Just after 9:00 p.m., a man entered the Shawmut Avenue store, initially acting as though he was a customer. This individual then brandished a firearm and demanded money and cigarettes.
Siam complied fully with the robber's demands, handing over the contents of the cash register and other items.
Despite his cooperation, the assailant forced Siam into another area of the store at gunpoint and shot him at close range. The entire tragic event was captured by the store's surveillance system. The gunman fled the scene, leaving Siam critically wounded. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was placed on life support and remained in a coma for weeks. His family was able to travel from Bangladesh to be by his side. After fighting for his life for over a month, Tanjim Siam succumbed to his injuries on August 22, 2020. He died with his mother holding his hand.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence led authorities to 25-year-old Stephon Samuel of Lynn. Samuel was arrested on August 7, 2020, in connection with the shooting. Evidence linking him to the crime included fingerprints left at the scene. Furthermore, Samuel was arrested following another attempted armed robbery in Brockton on July 22, and the firearm he allegedly used in that incident was matched through ballistics to the evidence found at the scene of Siam's shooting.
Following Siam's death, the charges against Samuel were upgraded to include murder, in addition to armed robbery with a firearm, armed assault to murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Prosecutors described the killing as a shameful and cowardly act, noting that Siam had done nothing to provoke the shooting and had complied with all demands. At his arraignment on August 24, 2020, Stephon Samuel was ordered to be held without bail pending trial.
