On a cold December evening in South Boston, the life of 38-year-old Maurice Scott was brought to a violent and tragic end. On December 5, 2015, at approximately 8:30 p.m., police responded to a call on Old Colony Avenue. There they found Maurice Scott lying on the ground next to his girlfriend's Mercedes-Benz, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into Scott's death quickly led to the identification of three suspects: Dewayne Diggs, Daquan Peters, and Dondre Snow. According to reports, a witness saw Scott already on the ground when a large man shot him several more times before getting into a car that then sped away. Police were able to locate the suspect's vehicle in Dorchester after a witness reported a car with its lights off and the occupants changing their clothes.
Dwayne Diggs, 23, of Randolph, and Dondre Snow, 22, of Dorchester, were charged with murder. Daquan Peters, 20, of Boston, was also arrested and charged with possession of an illegal firearm and possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute. During their arraignment, which was marked by a physical altercation between the families of the victim and the suspects outside the courthouse, Diggs and Snow were ordered held without bail. Investigators recovered a. 40-caliber firearm from a vacant lot near where the suspects were apprehended. Ballistics tests later matched the shell casings found at the scene of the crime to the recovered weapon.
Maurice Lamar Scott was the beloved son of Thomas and Belinda Scott and a loving father to his three children, Marquees, Mylyza, and Myreece. His death left a void in the lives of his family and friends. While the suspects were apprehended and charged, the court proceedings and the quest for justice for Maurice Scott were just beginning.
