On a Wednesday afternoon, September 16, 2015, the life of 23-year-old Luis Bodden-Maximo, a Black/Hispanic male, was tragically cut short in an execution-style shooting in Boston. The fatal encounter began innocuously enough, with Luis and his girlfriend having lunch at a TGI Friday's on Tremont Street. The atmosphere shifted when a man, later identified as Javier Smith, entered the restaurant and made eye contact with the couple.
Recognizing Smith as a member of the H-Block gang, Luis urged his girlfriend that they needed to leave immediately.
Their haste was tragically warranted. As they were getting into their car in the parking lot behind the restaurant, they were confronted by another man, Jerome Meade. Meade, an associate of Smith's, chillingly uttered, "you're an opp," before pulling out a. 40-caliber handgun and opening fire on Luis. As Luis desperately tried to flee, Meade pursued him, continuing to shoot. Luis eventually collapsed, falling face down, but the assault did not stop. Meade stood over him and fired multiple more shots. Luis Bodden-Maximo was rushed to Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed led to the arrests of three individuals connected to the H-Block gang: Jerome Meade, Javier Smith, and a third man, Lee Gill. Investigators used a combination of witness statements and video surveillance to piece together the events of that day. Evidence showed the gunman, identified as Meade, fleeing the scene and discarding his sweatshirt and the firearm, which was later found to have his DNA on it. Cell phone data placed both Smith and Meade at the scene of the crime. Lee Gill was identified as the driver of the getaway vehicle, a red Jeep Cherokee belonging to his mother, which was seen dropping Smith off before the shooting and then picking Meade up after.
In May of 2022, the judicial process culminated in convictions for two of the men responsible for Luis Bodden-Maximo's death. Jerome Meade was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Javier Smith was convicted of second-degree murder and received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 15 years. The sentencing was an emotional affair for Luis's family, who spoke of their profound and enduring grief.
