In the late evening of Thursday, March 25, 2021, the body of 34-year-old Benjamin Martinez of Springfield was discovered in an apartment at 1 East Hoosac Street in Adams, Massachusetts. Authorities were alerted to the scene at approximately 9:08 p.m. after an individual found Martinez and placed a call for help. Paramedics from the Adams Ambulance service arrived at the apartment and confirmed that Martinez was deceased.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Martinez's
death was swiftly undertaken by the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office, in conjunction with the Adams Police, North Adams Police, and the Berkshire County Sheriff's Office. The case was deemed a suspicious death, prompting a thorough examination of the scene and a search for those responsible. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and determined that Martinez's death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.
Within a few days of the discovery, the investigation led law enforcement to a suspect. On Friday evening, State Police in Springfield arrested a juvenile in connection with the shooting. The investigation established the juvenile as the shooter, and they were subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Due to the suspect's age, their identity has not been publicly released by the authorities. The juvenile was scheduled for arraignment in Northern Berkshire District Court on the following Monday.
