Xavier Louis-Jacques, a 19-year-old Black / African American male, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2021. The fatal encounter occurred on Pemberton Street, near the familiar landmarks of Rindge Field and its basketball courts, a place just minutes from his home.
A passerby discovered him unconscious outside his car and immediately called for help. First responders arrived on the scene to treat his injuries and quickly transported him to Mount Auburn Hospital, but his wounds proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The news of Xavier's death sent ripples of shock and grief through the community. He was remembered as a kind and driven young man who had just graduated from high school and was excitedly making plans to attend Xavier University. To save for his college education, he worked diligently as a security guard and a DoorDash driver. Beyond his work ethic, Xavier was a talented artist, a potter whose work had even been featured at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He was also an avid collector of shoes, a passion that his mother believes may have tragically led to his untimely death. She suspects that he was in the process of selling a pair of sneakers when he was killed, and that he may have been the victim of a robbery.
In the days and years that have followed the shooting, the investigation into Xavier Louis-Jacques's death has remained active, yet frustratingly unresolved. Law enforcement officials have publicly appealed for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible. They have noted that robbery seems an unlikely motive, as Xavier’s personal belongings, including his phone, keys, and wallet containing money, were found with him. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office and the Cambridge Police Department have urged witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.
