On the evening of Saturday, August 28, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the late summer peace in a Dorchester neighborhood. Responding to a ShotSpotter activation at approximately 6:30 PM, Boston police officers arrived at the scene in the area of 11 Erie Street. There, they discovered Shamel Winston Atkins, a 31-year-old Black / African American male from Dorchester, suffering from a serious gunshot wound.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene and transported Atkins to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Tragically, despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The Boston Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. Detectives began to piece together the events that led to the death of Shamel Winston Atkins, urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in their inquiry. The department assured the community that they would protect the identities of those who wished to provide information anonymously through their CrimeStoppers Tip Line.
Less than two weeks after the incident, a significant development occurred in the case. On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, detectives from the Boston Police Homicide Unit secured a murder warrant from Dorchester District Court for Gregory Cooper, a 40-year-old resident of Dorchester. Later that same day, Cooper surrendered himself to authorities at the Boston Police Headquarters. He was taken into custody and faced a murder charge in connection with the shooting death of Shamel Winston Atkins, bringing a measure of progress to an investigation that continued to unfold.
