In the late hours of Friday, April 15, 2022, the life of 21-year-old Karmari Alexander, a Black / African American male from Springfield, Massachusetts, was tragically cut short. At approximately 10:05 p.m., Springfield Police responded to a report of shots fired in an apartment building in the 1000 block of Worthington Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Alexander suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to Baystate Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the homicide was a collaborative effort between the Springfield Police Department's Homicide Unit and the Hampden District Attorney's Office's Murder Unit. Their work led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. Ten days after the incident, on April 25, detectives secured an arrest warrant for Andre Wise, a 21-year-old from Hartford, Connecticut.
The search for Wise concluded on a Wednesday in May when he was apprehended in Springfield. Members of the Springfield police, the U.S. Marshals task force, Massachusetts state police, the Hampden County District Attorney's Office, and the Hampden County Sheriff's Department located and arrested Wise near the intersection of Hall and Dickinson streets. At the time of his arrest, authorities reported seizing a loaded firearm and crack cocaine. Wise was subsequently charged with murder in connection with the death of Karmari Alexander. In addition to the murder charge, he faced a litany of other serious charges, including five counts of home invasion, assault with a dangerous weapon, and multiple firearms and drug possession offenses.
