In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Springfield, Massachusetts, the life of 19-year-old Semaj Brewster, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On January 12, 2025, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the night on the 100 block of Oakland Street, prompting a ShotSpotter activation that alerted the Springfield Police.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered Brewster suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to Baystate Medical Center in a fight for his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Semaj Brewster succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Springfield Police Department's Homicide Unit, in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney's Office, immediately launched an investigation into the shooting, treating it as a homicide.
For months, detectives worked to piece together the events of that fatal night. Their investigation eventually led them to identify a suspect in the killing. On Thursday, June 26, 2025, authorities successfully located and arrested a 16-year-old juvenile in connection with Brewster's death. The arrest was made on Dulong Circle in Chicopee by Springfield Homicide Detectives with the assistance of Chicopee Police Officers. Due to the suspect's age, their name has not been publicly released. The juvenile was subsequently arraigned in Springfield District Court on a murder charge and is being held without the right to bail.
